A good shrub can bring you lots of joy; a fragrant shrub even more! The sweet scent of a fragrant shrub just adds that little extra something to a garden or patio. It has that one special thing normal shrubs don’t have - which continues to make the increasingly popular.
There are many fragrant shrubs to choose from, but let’s start with a few that truly add something extra to the garden:
1. Sarcococca
Sarcococca, also known as sweet box, are compact, evergreen shrubs with tiny, fragrant flowers in winter. The flowers make for a great contrast with the dark green foliage, and the fact that Sarcococca blooms during the cold winter months makes this shrub even more unique. Sarcococca Winter Gem is known for its fantastic scent and disease-tolerance. The latest discovery, Purple Gem, is as spectacular as Winter Gem but stands out with its deep purple-red stems.
2. Philadelphus
Often tall, sometimes arching beautifully, Philadelphus flower in early summer. It flowers profusely with large, white flowers: often for weeks at the time. Philadelphus Dainty Lady spreads the sweetest scent and flowers very abundantly from early summer onwards.
3. Daphne
Daphnes might be the most known for their beautiful, incredibly fragrant blooms during either winter or spring. You’ll often see them planted near paths and doorways or at the front of borders so that anyone can enjoy their scent. Daphne Sweet Amethyst makes other Daphne follow its footprints with a scent so strong that you can recognize it from afar. People, bees, butterflies, birds: everyone loves the jasmine scent and abundant, long flowering of Sweet Amethyst!
4. Trachelospermum
It starts as a small shrub, but grows into one of the most spectacular, fragrant climbing plants. Trachelospermum, also known as star jasmine, is an evergreen climber that adds a little extra with its scented, jasmine-like flowers. Trachelospermum Star of Toscane flowers rich and freely with beautiful golden flowers, spreading a sweet scent from early summer until the fall. And the best thing is, Star of Toscane is drought tolerant and hardy to -18 °C!
5. Gardenia
Gardenias are evergreen shrubs with impressive flowers that spread an intoxicating fragrance. The waxy, creamy-white flowers make for a great contrast with the dark green foliage. Even though some Gardenia can be hard to grow, Double Diamonds is actually a lot easier to take care of. As long as she has plenty of sun, she’ll grow in both pots and borders. And the best thing is that Double Diamonds (as the name implies) has extra-large, double flowers: so double the scent to enjoy!
6. Lonicera
Even though Lonicera are often used for hedging or topiary pieces, the shrubby honeysuckle variety Chic & Choc® steps up to the majors with their incredibly sweet-scented flowers. Chic & Choc® flowers rich and long, from summer to autumn, making them a real magnet for bees and butterflies.
