How lovely it is to discover newborn flower buds while your garden is covered under a blanket of snow. Winter-flowering plants will make sure your garden is colourful all year round: even in the darkest months.

Believe it or not, there are quite some varieties of winter-flowering plants to pick from. There’s a beauty to be discovered for every spot in every garden! We’ve listed some amazing winter-flowering plants that will bring a splash of colour to that winter garden.

1. Sarcococca
Also known as sweet boxwood, Sarcococca is a special gem for the winter garden. They flower during the coldest months of the year and spread an often great scent. Take Winter Gem or Purple Gem for example: from February to April, this whole shrub is covered in pure white flowers that spread an incredible scent! As if that’s not enough, this beauty is disease-tolerant and compact, which makes her perfectly suited as evergreen ground cover or even a low, fragrant hedge!

2. Mahonia
Not only Sarcococca, but also Mahonia are known for its beautiful winter blooms. From early October, the new (introduced at IPM 2022) Mahonia Volcano shows an eruption of colour with its orange-yellow flowers. Mahonia Sweet Winter shows off with striking yellow flower clusters in the winter - followed by dark blue berries. In general, Mahonia is hardy enough to withstand winters (between -10 °C and -20 °C) in most climates and an absolutely gorgeous, exotic-looking plant to bring a splash of colour to the winter garden.
