In our humble opinion, nothing beats the sight of the first flower buds opening in early spring. A sign that sunny weather lays ahead and that before you know it, gardens and public instalments everywhere will embrace the world in a blanket of colour.
The best early-blooming spring flowers
With that in mind, these are a few of our favourite early-blooming perennials.
- Geranium Dreamland
From his Orkney Islands garden, Alan Bremner introduced the beautiful Geranium Dreamland. After five years of trials in Holland, the conclusion was drawn: this was one reliable, prolific and long flowering specimen. The pale pink flowers with dark veins start flowering in May, announcing the soon arrival of summer. The Geranium Dreamland is very useful towards the front of a border or spilling out of containers or hanging baskets.
2. Salvia Blue Bouquetta
Another fantastic addition to any garden is the Salvia Blue Bouquetta. With large, intense blue-purple flowers, you can enjoy a splash of colour from early summer all the way to winter. Blue Bouquetta is a compact, reblooming variety that will look stunning in perennial borders, combined containers or on terraces and balconies.
3. Euphorbia Tasmanian Tiger
This beautiful variegated Euphorbia isn’t just compact but starts flowering early spring! The ideal plant for a balcony or terrace and stunning addition to rock gardens and Mediterranean gardens. The Euphorbia Tasmanian Tiger is hardy to -15 °C and will grow to 60 cm high and wide.
4. Delosperma Ocean Sunset
The Delosperma Ocean Sunset will definitely get you in the mood for some gardening, with larger flowers than any Delosperma. Ocean Sunset knows a high flower count, and the showy flowers close at night and open mid-morning. The perfect sight to see when you’re enjoying your morning coffee! Once established, these Delospermas are very drought tolerant and hardly need any looking after.
5. Salvia Feathers Peacock
The Salvia Feathers Peacock is unique. Her beautiful, deeply incised foliage makes it the perfect elegant specimen for a perennial border or mass planting. She flowers from June all the way to August, only to rebloom again in autumn. One of the most prolonged flowering periods amongst Salvia!
6. Clematis Emerald Dream
This very low variety of Clematis will surprise you with masses of creamy white flowers. Making the Clematis Emerald Dream the ideal variety to pour out of pots, containers and hanging baskets, or provide some colour in a low growing border!
