Even though we often spend less time in the garden during the colder months, we wouldn’t want to be looking out over dead patches of lost life, would we? As you might’ve guessed, we’re about to list a few stunning, hardy, brightly coloured, evergreen plants that will make any garden look full of life. Even when covered under a blanket of snow.

1. Heuchera Dark Secret
It was once a Dark Secret, but not any longer. The very first Dark Secret seedling was found after a very, very harsh winter in France. Of all the Heuchera out there, only this little, hardy hero survived. Obviously, its hardiness is one of its most powerful USP’s, but besides being very hardy, he’s also quite beautiful.

2. Carex EverColor® series
Did you notice that the EverColor® series fit in with pretty much every subject we write about? Well: that’s because they do. It might just be the most multi-functional Carex around. You can use them for anything you put your mind to. Vertical gardens, billboards, hanging baskets, roof gardens, public instalments. Why? Because they’re colourful, beautiful, low-maintenance, strong, hardy and brightly coloured all year through.

3. Euonymus White Spire
See those tips that look as if they’ve been sprinkled with snow? They’ll look that exact same way all year through. White Spire has a neat, upright habit, isn’t picky about the type of soil and thrives in both sun and partial shade. An easy-going chap, that doesn’t just retain its colour all year around, but is also quite hardy.

4. Leucothoe Makijaz
Did you know that Makijaz means lipstick in Polish? Not that it matters that much, as the main thing is that Makijaz has the most stunning foliage and is also very hardy. A great pick to add some life and long-lasting colour to your borders during wintertime. While you’re at it, you might as well add Little Flames and Burning Love to that border. They’re just as hardy, and just as stunning as Makijaz. The more Leucothoe the merrier!

5. Picea December
If you name a plant after the month of December, that means it kinda has something going with it. The obvious choice would be to say that Picea December makes for an absolutely adorable outdoor Christmas tree. But there’s always more to December than you’d expect, isn’t there? Picea December has a dense, closed cone habit and actually grows much faster compared to other family members. Perennial cuttings can be planted three months later with the same results! Besides that, December is better, stronger and very suitable for smaller gardens.
