We need to make sure that bees and other pollinating insects don’t disappear forever. Without these beautiful creatures, wild plants wouldn’t be pollinated and therefore wouldn’t produce the fruits and seeds that other animals such as birds need to eat. This makes pollinators vital to maintaining (and even creating) the ecosystems that so many animals rely on for food. Did you know that worldwide, over half of the diet of fats and oils comes from crops that are pollinated by animals (source: Growing a Greener World®)?
The best pollinator-friendly plants
It’s no wonder that pollinator-friendly plants are a (much needed) trend within the sector worldwide. Thankfully, there’s a vast amount of different varieties available that are as pollinator-friendly as it gets. These are some of our favourites.
1. Skimmia Miracle
Then we have the miraculous Skimmia Miracle: which has been received as a true miracle amongst growers worldwide. The incredibly strong root system of this Skimmia makes her a lot stronger than other family members, and as all Skimmia, this beauty is very pollinator-friendly.
2. Echinacea Tweety
Now we all know that Echinacea are great multi-purpose perennials, but did you know that the Tweety has excellent pot performance and is hardy to a whopping -30 °C? As if that’s not enough, bees and butterflies absolutely adore Tweety!
3. Lavandula Blue Jeans & Lavandula Phenomenal
Not only are these Lavandula powerful growers (as you can see in this video), they’re also very hardy and have an incredibly long flowering period. The powerful Lavandula Blue Jeans and Lavandula Phenomenal flourish throughout the seasons and will attract pollinators without a doubt.
4. Geranium Dreamland
The quest for the perfect Geranium can cease. It is found by Alan Bremner as a seedling in 1996 and is called Geranium Dreamland. It’s fast-growing, reblooming, low-maintenance, disease tolerant and a magnet for butterflies and bees!
5. Hydrangea Goldrush
Now, as you probably know, the hydrangea can often use some pruning. But besides a bit of care, the fantastic hydrangea Goldrush isn’t too hard to maintain and will attract pollinators from far and wide. It’s easy to propagate, hardy to -12ºC, and in all honesty, just looks fantastic in shrub borders, mixed containers or even as a solitary!
6. Buddleja Berries & Cream
The stunning Buddleja Berries & Cream is one of the many spectacular Peter Moore introductions. This specific variety, flowers incredibly rich from June to October: creating a real feast for bees and butterflies!
7. Deutzia Raspberry Sundae
With brighter colours than other Deutzia, Raspberry Sunday is a natural beauty for the garden. Her large flowers appear along the whole branch, and she blooms from mid-spring to mid-summer. Her flowers are slightly scented to attract butterflies and bees; she’s easy to grow and hardly requires any maintenance!
8. Nepeta Neptune
Nepeta Neptune is a versatile perennial. You can enjoy the abundance of flowers of the Neptune from summer up to autumn in the right place. Neptune attracts bees and butterflies, contributes to biodiversity and is absolutely stunning!
9. Sedum SunSparkler®
Next on our list are the fantastic Sedum SunSparkler® series. These beautiful, compact sedums are uniquely coloured, strong, disease-resistant, hardy, low-maintenance and adored by bees and butterflies!
10. Diervilla Honey Surprise
What’s in a name? Well, in this case, pretty much everything. The latest novelty Diervilla Honey surprise is a magnet for butterflies and bees. She blooms richly with golden yellow flowers and provides beauty all year through. She’s also disease tolerant, low-maintenance, easy to grow, hardy and not picky about the type of soil!
11. Veronica Bubblegum Candles
Bubblegum Candles is an excellent addition to the Veronica assortment. It has deep pink flowers that appear in early summer. She flowers abundantly, is disease tolerant, and great for mass plantings, perennial borders and mixed containers!
