It may be tricky to grow trees in small gardens, but it’s not impossible. Not all trees grow as high and wide as most do: some species have a compact habit that won’t overgrow their surroundings. As you might’ve guessed, we’re about to list five small trees for small gardens: one even more beautiful than the other! 

 

1. Magnolia Pink Pyramid 

Magnolia Pink Pyramid is a narrow ascending tree that, after ten years, is about 4 m high and 1.5 m wide: making it an extremely suitable tree for landscaping, the smaller garden or even for pot on a terrace or balcony. She has a narrow, upright growth habit, which means she won’t take too much space in smaller gardens. The foliage is dark green, and the flowers colour from purple to dark pink. The best thing is that you don’t have to wait long for its beautiful flowers to appear. Pink Pyramid flowers from an early age and blooms in the spring with a rebloom in summer! 

2. Cornus Flower Tower 

Cornus Flower Tower is, as the name implies, a flowering tower. Flower Tower grows upright and columnar, making it perfectly suited for small gardens. He’ll grow about 4 m tall and 1 m wide, leaving plenty of outdoor space to enjoy. As if that’s not enough, he flowers abundantly in early summer and will manage to surprise with his scarlet red foliage in autumn. 

 

3. Styrax June Snow and Evening Light 

Planted in a sunny spot,  Styrax Evening Light produces glossy, dark purple leaves. Combined with the immense amount of flowers, it creates a breathtaking contrast. Evening Light has a compact, bushy and upright habit and grows to 175 cm high and 100 cm wide, making it the perfect tree for pots, planters or even balconies! 

 

On the other hand, Styrax June Snow impresses with its white flowers’ beautiful droopy, bell-shape. They smell deliciously sweet and flower for quite some time: giving you all the time you need to enjoy the lovely display. The compact and upright habit, similar to Evening Light, makes it perfect for small gardens and other locations with limited space 

4. Acer Starfish and Moonrise 

Acer Starfish is meant to draw attention with its stunning dark red foliage in summer, turning to a bright red in autumn. The elegant, compact and upright habit make Starfish perfectly suited for mixed containers and small gardens. 

 

And just like Starfish, Acer Moonrise manages to surprise everyone with its spectacular colours. In spring, the colour of its new shoots is bright red, which forms a beautiful contrast with its fresh, chartreuse leaves. In summer, Moonrise is fully covered with almost fluorescent chartreuse foliage. Very suitable as solitary on terrace or balcony, plant borders, mixed containers and for landscaping.
