Description

Joining other new Raymond J. Evison introductions, Clematis Baroness Fookes steals the show. The Guernsey Breeding Program focusses on producing compact, free-flowering, and repeat-blooming Clematis varieties and Clematis Baroness Fookes exemplifies these goals. This plant blooms abundantly with successive sets of flower buds, from May to July and again in late summer. The blossoms are a rich purple-blue with a darker purple stripe, measure 12-14 cm across and boast striking red anthers. The mid to deep green, dense foliage provides an ideal backdrop for its charming, ruffled flowers.

This beautiful large-flowered clematis is released in honour of Janet Evelyn Fookes, Baroness Fookes DBE DL, one of the first recipients of the Royal Horticultural Society’s new Elizabeth Medal of Honour. Clematis Baroness Fookes flowers readily and abundantly and is a perfect choice for a patio, planter, or in the middle to front of a flower border, where its prolonged flowering can be enjoyed.

How to care for Clematis Baroness Fookes:
Clematis Baroness Fookes responds well to straightforward pruning. To maintain its beauty, cut back all stems to 15 cm above soil level in late winter or early spring. A season's growth attains about 90-120 cm. With its deeper-coloured blooms, this clematis will thrive in full sun to partial shade and prefers a spot in well-drained soil. Clematis Baroness Fookes is hardy up to -15 ºC.
