Have you ever heard of the term ‘foodscaping’ (if you haven't, look up Brienna Gluvna!)? It might sound a bit cheesy (pun intended), but it’s one of the past few years’ hottest gardening trends. What it’s all about? Basically, it’s no more than a technique used to create an edible landscape. Or, in other words: a garden filled with edible ornamentals.

The benefits of a food garden

Food gardens are a point of pride for gardeners all over the worlds. If there’s enough sun to grow healthy veg, fruits and herbs - you’ll most likely find them. Growing your own food is famous for many reasons, one being the multifunctionality of the edible garden. With the right edible ornamentals, you’ll create an exciting landscape design in the blink of an eye, that’ll also provide you with beautiful, home-grown ingredients all year through.

Growing food with little space

Growing fruits and veg is pretty straightforward. Whether you have a large garden or a small balcony: there will always be edible ornamentals that feel right at home. Whether you want to grow your own berries for healthy summer smoothies or attractively coloured kales for superfoods filled with antioxidants… These are our 3 favourite edible ornamentals:

1. Rainbow Candy Crush
No longer than a few days ago, we introduced the revolutionary Rainbow Candy Crush kale on IPM. And this truly is one spectacular plant. You’ve probably seen the bright-purple coloured kales before - but have you ever seen a variety that you can actually EAT?! Well, the Rainbow Candy Crush combines the best of both worlds. Its stunning, bright purple colour provides you with interesting focal points in your food garden, and when the season arises, you can use this healthy kale for all sorts of recipes.
How about a super-healthy kale smoothie? Some purple ornaments in your summer salad? This kale is filled with healthy antioxidants, and adds spectacular colour to your garden and recipes!

2.  Malus Appletini
This must-have mini apple tree provides you with gorgeous mini-apples and happens to be incredibly easy to grow. The mini apple tree Malus Appletini has a compact growth, making it suitable for both gardens and patio’s or balconies! The pink spring blossoms fill your garden with beautiful colours, and when the time comes, there’ll be loads of golf-ball sized fruits to pick.
Great fun for kids, and a perfect little tree to grow your own food with limited space!

 3.  Rubus Yummy
And more berries! The Rubus Yummy is a compact, hardy shrub: perfectly suited for containers. This adorable dwarf doesn’t have any thorns and provides you with sweet, red fruits from summer. She only grows up to 50 cm high but generates fruit abundantly. Oh, and did we already mention that she’s hardy to an impressive -30ᵒC?!
