As outdoor spaces become smaller, gardeners are looking for plants that offer maximum impact without taking over the garden. One of the strongest garden trends for 2027 is choosing compact, long-flowering varieties that fit perfectly into urban gardens, patios and containers. These plants combine ornamental value with low maintenance and deliver reliable performance throughout the second half of the growing season.

Vertical flowers and compact shrubs

The Flower Tower® series demonstrates how shrubs can make a statement while occupying very little space. Hibiscus syriacus Flower Tower Ruby has a narrow, upright habit that reaches around 3 metres high while remaining only about 80 cm wide after ten years. From late July until early October it produces striking semi-double dark pink-red flowers with red centres, attracting bees and butterflies throughout the flowering season. Its excellent branching, heat and drought tolerance, and winter hardiness make it an ideal choice for modern gardens.

Gardeners wanting a fuller shrub can choose the Hibiscus Chiffon® series. These neatly shaped shrubs produce large semi-double flowers from July until October and require very little maintenance. New additions such as Purple Chiffon® and Ruby Chiffon® extend the colour range with rich purple and warm ruby-red flowers, making them excellent feature plants for borders and patio containers.

Gardens that support pollinators

One of the standout introductions is the Buddleja Little Rockstars® series. Reaching just 40 to 50 cm in height and width, these compact shrubs produce masses of flowers from summer into autumn in shades of violet, pink, purple, red and white. Their long flowering period and exceptional appeal to butterflies make them ideal for adding biodiversity without sacrificing valuable garden space. Whether planted in containers or mixed borders, Little Rockstars® delivers colour all season long.

Beautiful gardens with less maintenance

Late summer is also the perfect time to appreciate plants that offer more than flowers alone. Carex EverColor® Sunsplash brings bright variegated foliage that provides structure throughout the year. For a bold architectural statement, Yucca French Flag combines intense blue foliage with outstanding year-round presence.

The modern garden is designed to work harder with fewer plants. Compact shrubs that flower for months, attract pollinators and require minimal pruning offer exactly what today's gardeners are looking for. By choosing innovative varieties that combine ornamental value with practical performance, even the smallest outdoor spaces can provide colour and interest from midsummer well into autumn.
